CATARACT
Q. What is a Cataract?
A. A Cataract is clouding of the human lens that blocks the vision and makes it blurry.
Q. What are its causes?
A.
Most important is ageing - it can occur at 50-55 yrs. or thereabout cataract can also occur because of injury, other diseases of the eye like uveitis or of the body like diabetes and prolonged use of drugs like steroids.
Q. How does a patient come to know about cataract?
A.
Hazy or dim vision, glare / haloes around lights, difficulty in driving, changing visual performance during day and night, double vision and frequent change in glasses can all point towards presence of a cataract.

CATARACT

Q. What is the treatment?
A.
Cataract can only be treated surgically. However, the surgical treatment has come of age and improved tremendously that has helped that patient. Previously on intra ocular lens (IOL) was used and stitches were applied. Now a days, cataract is surgically treated by phacoemulsification where in no stitches are applied and patient's recovery is rapid. No hospitalisation is required. The surgery lasts for 20-25 minutes; the patients can resume work the next day. Outstation patients can travel. Some eye drops need to be put after operation for a couple of weeks.
Q. What's the life of an IOL?
A. Unlimited. Good for lifetime.
Q. What should be the time interval between the two catract surgeries?
A. There should preferably be a gap of one week.
Q. Are glasses required after Cataract surgery ?
A. Usually one can do without them. but sometimes glasses for for the distance or near vision or both might be required.

GLAUCOMA

Q. What is Glaucoma?
A.
In this the intra-ocular pressure of the eye increases, which can be heralded with or without (symptom-less) pain, severely jeopardising the vision permanently. Usually the common age for this is 40 years or above but it can be there earlier as well. Careful eye check-up can help in diagnosis. Some of the symptoms are common with Cataract
Q. What's treatment of Glaucoma?
A. Depending upon its type, the treatment can be with eye drops, lasers or surgery or a combination of these. The treatment should not be delayed.
LASIK LASER
Q. What is Lasik Laser?
A. Lasik laser is the latest and world's best treatment for removal of glasses. Usually all types of glasses can be removed.
Q. How is this performed ?
A.
Both the eyes are treated in the same sitting. A detailed pre-laser checkup is done. No injection is required, the procedure takes about 10-15 minutes. The patient will be relieved to go home immediately. Visual stabilisation takes 2-10 days. The patient can resume work as soon as he is comfortable. Eye drops are required for some time.
Q. Is there any difference between different Lasik machines?
A.
Yes, the lasik laser which customises the correction according to the patient is the best although this can be a little expensive than the standard.
Q. Is the treatment painful ?
A. No
Q. Does are achieve 6/6 vision ?
A. More or less - you can see well without glasses even if it s 6/9 or thereabout.

A. Yes

DIABETIC RETINOPATHY
Q. What is diabetic retinopathy?
A.
Effects of diabetes on retina of the eye giving rise to bleeding and other complications seriously decreasing vision.
Regular careful eye checkup for such changes is mandatory for all diabetics, Early diagnosis and early treatment with laser, whenever required, goes a long way in preventing serious complications that are a rule in later stages/where no treatment has been done before.
Q. Is this laser for diabetes same as lasik laser?
A. No. Infact different types of lasers are used for different eye diseases.
Q. What happens after laser treatment for diabetes?
A.
Control of diabetes is still important..laser treatment for diabetes may have to be given in repeated sittings. Some times the diabetic disease is severe and it might require aggressive intervention.
 
 

CORNEAL TRANPLANTATION
Q. What is Corneal transplantation?
A.
The central transparent part of the eye, called cornea when diseased can be transplanted with another received by means of eye donations following death. This is a major surgery and takes about an hour or so. The success rate is over 90%, which is considered good in any organ transplantation. The rehabilitation process takes2-3 weeks and is completed in about three months. Glasses are usually required after this.
