Nausea & Marijuana

Nausea is one of the oldest applications for medical marijuana. Over 50 studies, which have been conducted all over the world, have shown the efficacy of medical marijuana in combatting nausea. The anti-nausea affect of medical marijuana is two-fold. Medical marijuana targets the endocannabinoid system and blocks a specific brain receptor in the serotonin family. Comparative studies have found that cannabinoids are more effective than most other traditional pharmaceutical medications in the treatment of nausea. These discoveries have lead to the creation of FDA approved synthesized THC to treat nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy. Oral administration of a THC-like medication has been thought to be an effective treatment for children who undergo chemotherapy and become nauseated. A 1995, study found that the less psychoactive 8-THC was able to completely prevent and control nausea when it was taken 2 hours prior to starting the chemotherapy. Due to its low levels of psycho-activity, the only side effect is slight irritability.
