Anorexia & Marijuana

Anorexia is an eating disorder that causes sufferers to obsess about what they eat and can lead to dramatic weight loss. It is believed that Anorexia may be due to an imbalance in brain chemistry. A recent study, published in Biological Psychology found that the endocannibinoid system did not function properly in patients with anorexia. In women who suffered from this disorder, the part of the brain which associates the taste of food with pleasure, the insula, was extremely underactive. The brains endocannibinoid system helps to regulate the insula. When this system is not functioning, as it should, anorexia can result. The use of marijuana to stimulate the body’s metabolism and cause and increase in appetite is well known. By augmenting the bodies own endocannabinoid system in the brain, the system can be “reset” and the person taking the THC/CDC medical marijuana can again experience the joy of eating.
