Depression & Marijuana

Depression sufferers can have debilitating feeling of sadness and low self esteem. One of the main theories of the etiology of depression is that the brain produces a low amount of endocannabinoids. Endocannabinoids that occur naturally in the body bind to a receptor in the brain to create a mood-stabilizing effect. With a low amount of these endocannabinoids produced within the patients body, the stabilizing effect is gone and depression can result. There have been studies, however, that show small doses of cannabis can have the effect of replacing endocannabinoids when levels are too low. Too high a dose of cannabis, however, can have the opposite effect and cause more severe depression.
