PMS & Marijuana

“PMS” or premenstrual syndrome occurs in the few days or weeks that lead up to menstruation. It may also occur during the beginning of a woman’s menstrual cycle. Symptoms of PMS can include headaches, bloating, insomnia, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, and pain. Behavioral symptoms may include mood swings and episodes of hostility and anger. Recorded use of cannabis to treat PMS can be traced back to the 1890s, when Queen Victoria’s physician recommend its usage for the relief of menstrual cramps. While medical cannabis has not been shown to restore balance to hormonal levels, it can help to treat some symptoms of PMS. Migraines and headaches seem to be aided with cannabis because marijuana can mimic the bodies own endocannabinoid system. The anti-inflammatory effects of cannabis have been well documented. Cannabis can result in a decrease in the constipation, bloating, and diarrhea that can occur with PMS. For centuries, marijuana has been used to treat insomnia and anxiety. Both of these symptoms can be helped by cannabinol (CBN) which is natural product of THC breakdown, which can also aid in sleep.
