Stress & Marijuana

Stress is caused when the demands of a situation are beyond the perceived ability of a person to cope with them. Stress can cause the release of hormones that can increase blood pressure, raise heart rate, cause acid production in the stomach to increase, increase bowel motility, and potentially cause an anxiety disorder or depression. The endocannabinoid system naturally regulates anxiety and stress by releasing cannabinoids in the body, which are the same chemicals found in cannabis. These cannabinoids have been shown to act similarly to opioids. THC has been shown to interact with anandamide, which is a neurotransmitter found in the human body, creating a relaxed feeling and sleepiness. This reaction could be due to the newly discovered cannabinoid receptors in amygdala region of the brain. The amygdala is responsible for controlling rapid emotions and anxiety that can be modulated by the cannabinoids in cannabis.
