Tourette's & Marijuana

Tourette’s is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder of unknown origin. Patients suffer from involuntary vocal tics, severity of these tics can vary greatly. In 1999, the Journal of Psychiatry reported that researchers found that THC resulted in a “significant improvement of tics and obsessive-compulsive behavior compared to placebo”. No cognitive impairment was reported and it was concluded that “THC is effective and safe in treating tics and OCB in Tourette’s patients”. One theory as to why cannabis helps patients with Tourette’s is the excessive amount of dopamine in sufferers. Since there are strong interactions between dopamine and the endocannabinoid system, the modulation that results from the administration of THC may be the answer to tics suffered by patients with Tourette's.
