You are able to get a California medical card within the state of California while you are within the state. After obtaining your card you can then legally purchase and consume within CA. Unfortunately, it is not legal to transport your medication outside of state lines.
Although CA is going recreational in January, you will most likely still need your med card through 2018 as most licenses being given within the state are for medical dispensaries and deliveries and the roll out may be much slower than anticipated.
