DIY Recipe: Cannabis-Infused Marinade for 4th of July

The Fourth of July is a classic American holiday that’s best enjoyed with friends and a barbecue. It just isn’t the same unless you spend the day eating smoky and delicious meats and/or vegetables straight from the grill. So, in honor of America’s birthday, here’s a recipe for cannabis-infused Kansas City-style barbecue sauce that you can use on any type of meat, seafood or veggies.


It’s incredibly easy to infuse cannabis into marinades using whatever tincture you prefer at the effective dose for you. We’ll give recommendations on dose and type of tincture in the recipe below, but feel free to change this up to fit your needs and tolerance level.

Another plus with a marinade is that you can dose some, but not all, of the food—your non-cannabis consuming friends will thank you. To do this, all you have to do is make the marinade and split the batch into two containers; then add the cannabis tincture to one of them. Don’t forget to clearly label that container “infused with cannabis.”

Then, when you’re ready to grill, cook the non-medicated food items first, followed by the medicated goods. Make sure the trays or plates where the food ultimately ends up are clearly labeled as well and that the marijuana-infused foods are out of reach of any children.


Ingredients for Cannabis-Infused Kansas City Barbecue Marinade

  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 15 mL 1:1 THC:CBD cannabis tincture
  • 6 cloves of garlic, peeled and smashed
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 tsp allspice
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 2 cups organic ketchup
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup dark molasses
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp kosher salt
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp dried mustard
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 bay leaf

How to Make Cannabis-Infused Kansas City Barbecue Marinade

  1. Bring a large saucepan to medium heat.
  2. Toss in the garlic, tomato paste, chili powder, paprika, red pepper, allspice and cloves.
  3. Cook for about 3 minutes until very fragrant and the tomato paste is dark red.
  4. Add the remaining ingredients except the cannabis tincture: ketchup, water, vinegar, brown sugar, molasses, bay leaf, black pepper, mustard, soy sauce, salt and Worcestershire sauce.
  5. Lower the heat to a simmer, and let all of these ingredients come together for 30 minutes.
  6. Remove the saucepan from heat; then remove the bay leaf.
  7. If you’re splitting this batch into two for a non-medicated and medicated version, this is the time to do it.
  8. Add the cannabis tincture, and whisk it in until completely mixed.
