In search of the Big O? A 2019 study published in the journal Sexual Medicine shows that in addition to many other sex-enhancing benefits, cannabis can improve orgasms for women during sex. A new 2023 study in the Journal of Cannabis Research shores up the claim.

Let’s take a look at the research and zero in on a few ways you can harness cannabis’s potent effects to make for a more satisfying sex life.

Cannabis’s Role in Increasing Sex Drive & Improving Sexual Satisfaction

Scientists have been studying cannabis and sex for years. In fact, cannabis has been used as an aphrodisiac in many cultures for centuries. We also have plenty of contemporary, anecdotal evidence of cannabis affecting sex—and while it’s a complicated subject, the outcomes are usually for the better. Take this 1984 survey from The Journal of Sex Research, for example: More than two thirds of respondents reported that cannabis increased sexual satisfaction and pleasure. More recently, a 2017 published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine showed that cannabis consumers have sex more than those who don’t consume the plant.

Study Finds Cannabis Can Help Women Achieve a Better Orgasm

In the 2019 study we mentioned above, from the journal Sexual Medicine, researchers looked more closely at how cannabis consumption affects the sex lives of women in particular. They found that taking cannabis before sex increases the likelihood that a woman will experience a satisfying orgasm.

The study involved 373 women over an 11-month period. Those who took cannabis before sex had 2.13 higher odds of a satisfactory orgasm than those who didn’t.

Cannabis frequency also seemed to affect orgasms. Those who consumed cannabis regularly had even higher chances (an additional 2.1 higher odds) of experiencing that satisfying orgasm.

Most women said that cannabis also decreased pain and increased their sex drive.

The 2023 study further supports these findings that cannabis can improve orgasms for women. The report, entitled “The influence of cannabis on sexual functioning and satisfaction,” summarized the results of a survey of 811 adults between the ages of 18 and 85. The majority of them identified as female and all had previous experience with cannabis; the researchers made sure that the survey comprised of people of difference ages, backgrounds, professions and sexual preferences.

When the results came in, 70 percent of respondents stated that using cannabis before sex meant they were more likely to orgasm; 62 percent also reported that cannabis increased pleasure while masturbating. This leads researchers to believe that—in addition to the likelihood that cannabis can improve orgasms for women—cannabis may also be helpful in the treatment of sexual dysfunction, as well as in closing the orgasm inequality gap between heterosexual women and men.

Using Cannabis to Improve Your Sexual Experiences

If these research studies have you wondering about how cannabis can be integrated into your own sex life, there are many ways you can go about giving it a try

You can go about it in so many ways:

  • Inhaled methods like vaping or smoking cannabis flower can be a great way to go, because they can provide a full body and mind high in a short period of time. A quick inhale a few minutes before your bedroom romp can make all the difference.
  • For marijuana edibles, you’ll want to eat them one to two hours before sexy time. But they may not be the most convenient consumption method for improving orgasms, because timing the effects of edibles can be tricky. Still, for some people, the heavy, relaxing body high that comes with edibles is their favorite aphrodisiac. If this is the case for you, incorporate your favorite cannabis-infused food into a romantic dinner, and you’ll be ready to go when it’s time to head to the bedroom.
  • Cannabis topicals can help to boost your sexual experience by relaxing your body. In the case of specialized cannabis oils, you can apply the product directly to your sensitive areas for added stimulation.

While more research needs to be done to understand exactly how cannabis is pulling off these incredible sex-boosting tricks, the plant certainly seems to help. So, try it out yourself and see whether it can help improve your orgasms. The results could be mind-blowing.
